Bring on the Rockies...
Ok, maybe not quit yet for the Rockies...But Caesars Head in South Carolina is a pretty good prep!
Caesars Head - check! Coach Dan Shelby put me to the test today with a 55 mile ride which included a 6.5 mile climb to the top of Caesars Head. Until last week, I never knew what Ceasars Head was...until last night I did not know anything about the climb. So here is Caesars Head Mountain Stats:
2038' Climb, the average grade is 5.5% and the steepest grade is 10%.
Coach introduced me to experienced cyclist who are my pace to ride with, we started at Furman University and made our way to Caesars Head. I have never done a climb this long and continuous before. I took the advice of fellow riders to get comfortable and keep a steady pace up, the hair pin turns stand for a little reprieve.

There are signs on the way up saying "4 Miles to visitors Center" - somehow I missed
the others. My legs were tiring, my lower back was burning, and I was thinking I think I have at least another 1-2 miles to go - I cannot stop! All of of sudden I saw it - a little cabin with cars up ahead on my left and on my right a sign reassuring me that yes it was only 1000' to the summit of Caesars Head!! Ah! I was sooo excited, I made it!!
Once at the top - it was for the descend!! I must admit, from a clothing standpoint I was not prepared! The temparture outside was upper 40's, and on the way to Caesars Head my toes were cold. I had my tri bike shoes on (which allows a lot of air to pass through them - ideal for hot summer days for cooling) without shoe or toe covers. In addition, somehow I missed packing my gloves! Luckily a fellow rider had an extra pair that saved me! Never again will my toes be cold! On the way down Caesars Head that cold air send chills through my body causing the shivering to start. Even shivering - what a thrilling ride down!!
